Using a heat pump for winter on the Costa Blanca

If your Costa Blanca home feels colder inside than outside, look at the building before buying a bigger heater.

A Costa Blanca home can be uncomfortable in winter even when the outdoor temperature isn't particularly low. Draughts, poor insulation and uneven heating can leave some rooms much colder than others. A heat-pump proposal should account for those conditions and explain how it will heat the rooms you actually use.

Check why the home feels cold

Look at draughts, glazing, insulation and which rooms are cold. Note where condensation appears. This helps distinguish the heating you need from building defects that also need attention.

IDAE's heat-pump guidance ties performance to design and the building as well as the equipment. Ask the installer to explain those factors rather than choosing solely from the floor area.

Ask how each room gets heat

A wall-mounted unit may serve the living room well and do little for a bedroom behind a closed door. Ducted, multi-split and air-to-water arrangements solve different problems and involve different work.

Get a proposal showing room distribution, heating output, controls, electrical demand, exterior location, drainage and noise. If hot water is part of the plan, ask how it is supplied too.

Discuss controls and moisture problems

Ask the installer to show you how to control the rooms you use and what maintenance the system needs. Keep required ventilation while dealing with unwanted draughts. Heating may help some condensation, but leaks and other moisture problems need their own diagnosis.

Arrange the installation

Use an enabled installation company and check community or municipal requirements for exterior work. Have the installation tested and the controls demonstrated, and retain the applicable documents with the equipment instructions.

Before you go ahead

  • Heat-loss factors assessed
  • Room distribution explained
  • Electrical demand checked
  • Exterior permission resolved
  • Heating commissioned and demonstrated

Common questions

Is air conditioning expensive for heating?

A modern heat-pump system can be efficient, but cost depends on equipment performance, building heat loss, tariff, controls and usage.

Will heating cure damp?

It may reduce surface condensation in some conditions, but leaks, thermal bridges, inadequate ventilation and moisture production need their own diagnosis.
